Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IELTS Indicator test?

It is a test, completed online, that includes Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking sections and uses IELTS questions marked by IELTS examiners. This means that this test is more reliable than a mock test, as it provides a more accurate score.

IELTS Indicator follows the same content, format, structure and timing of an IELTS test. IELTS Indicator Speaking test continues to value the importance of face-to-face conversational English as it conducted over video call with a real IELTS examiner.

The test is available for a limited time in certain countries where IELTS testing is currently suspended or limited due to COVID-19.

How is IELTS Indicator different from the IELTS test?

IELTS Indicator is a session-based, online test that can be taken from home. The test uses IELTS content, format, structure and timing and will be familiar to test takers. Results are indicative as they may not be the same as would be achieved in a high-stakes, secure, test centre environment.

How is this test delivered?

It is an online test that can be taken from home, with a laptop or desktop computer and internet access. Test takers will download a Secure Exam Browser (SEB), disabling other applications on that device.

How is IELTS Indicator Speaking test different from the IELTS Speaking test?

Both IELTS and IELTS Indicator have a one-to-one Speaking test with an IELTS Examiner. IELTS Indicator utilises a real-time video communications tool to achieve this.

By hosting the Speaking test with a trained examiner, IELTS Indicator maintains focus on assessing real-life conversational English ability – just like in the real world. No penalties for accents and no attempting to game a computer algorithm.

How much do test takers have to pay for IELTS Indicator?

The test fee is USD149.

Who marks the IELTS Indicator test?

Responses are marked by trained certified IELTS Examiners, following the IELTS marking criteria.

What is the duration of IELTS Indicator?

It is the same duration as IELTS. Listening is for 30 minutes, followed by Reading for 60 minutes and then Writing for 60 minutes. The Speaking test can be held either before or after the Listening, Reading and Writing test and takes 11-14 minutes.

Will IELTS Indicator replace IELTS?

While it is not intended to replace IELTS, education institutions will be able to use IELTS Indicator results to help assess students’ applications during this period of suspended in-person testing.

Is there a minimum age requirement for test takers to be able to take IELTS Indicator?

Yes. IELTS Indicator has been designed as a test for adults, and is not recommended for those under 18 years only. Those aged 15 or under cannot take IELTS Indicator. Those aged 16 or 17 years old must get a consent form signed by a parent/guardian and will also need to have a chaperone with them during their IELTS Indicator Speaking test.

What should I have with me during the Speaking test?

For your Speaking test, you will need to have your passport/identity document which you booked your IELTS Indicator test with, along with a paper and pen. You have to download Zoom video call application to your laptop or computer and ensure you have a web camera.

About IELTS Indicator scores

Will the test taker receive an overall score and scores for each skill?

An overall indicative score will be given to test-takers as well as scores for each section of the test.

When will IELTS Indicator results be released?

Will score ranges for IELTS Indicator be the same as for the regular in-person IELTS test?

Yes.
